An exhibition by the 46th group of MAK Center Artists and Architects-in-Residence. Resident group XLVI (April–September 2018) consisted of Gerry Bibby, Aleksandra Domanovic, and Noemi Polo. As with each residency session before, their time in Los Angeles concluded with a short-run exhibition at the Mackey open free to the public.
Berlin-based artist Gerry Bibby on his installation in the Mackey Garage Top:
“Some time away in the sun could be great way to get down to compiling some writing . . . at least that’s what I’d thought. Thing is, {things} keep tripping me up.
Cross Walk is a sculpture deploying a repeatable brick pattern to demarcate space. The City adorns select intersections using various motifs with a similar logic. In a tone resembling the skin on my inner-arm (Nude Brick), the work collapses the denoted {thing} with the action you will perform as you encounter it.

Berlin-based artist Aleksandra Domanović showed raw footage of cattle that was shot at UC Davis this past May. Some of the calves seen in the footage, shown in the Garage Top, are offspring of a Holstein bull that was genetically edited to not grow horns. To be polled (without horns) is a dominant trait—whereas horned is recessive—one thus needs two copies of the recessive allele in order to have horns. Because the bull passed on only one polled allele these calves will likely be hornless as well.
Europe-based architect Noemi Polo (aka Amore Agency) presented the brand Schindler, a series of lifestyle products in the Mackey Apartments Penthouse—“use what is dominant in a culture to change it quickly.”
about the artists and architects-in-residence program
The Artists and Architects-in-Residence Program at the Mackey Apartments is a six-month residency offered twice annually to two artists and one architect. Running continuously since 1995, the main focus of the initiative is on the purposeful support of individual practitioners, and on creating new interdisciplinary opportunities and confrontations through lively exchange.
This unique program is funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture in cooperation with the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art, Vienna.
