Rotating Vitrine
With an emphasis on process over finality, the rotating vitrine accommodates new materials that emerge from research associated with our centennial exhibition, Schindler House: 100 Years in the Making. The vitrine is programmed by guest curators and changes periodically.
In our second iteration of the Rotating Vitrine, Graduate Curatorial Intern Sylvia Faichney shares MAK Centers archived drawings by artist Carmen Argote in 2014 in preparation for the 2015 two-part installation series, A Vast Furniture. Part One was installed at the Schindler House, and Part Two was installed at High Desert Test Sites (HDTS). Argote describes the ephemera displayed here as "notes" that are "detailing specific moments within the work." The wooden pieces that once outlined the footprint of the Schindler House, the photographed plans, and the drawings all articulate Argote’s process of locating the perimeter of the Schindler House’s social spaces. Documentation of the installation at HDTS is currently on display in the Schindler House nursery.
Our summer Getty Marrow Undergraduate Intern, Bella Wayans, is showcasing her research in the most recent iteration of our Rotating Vitrine. As her selections in the Vitrine articulate, the MAK Center has carried on the legacy of Schindler's ethos through exhibition programming which has consistently played with the borders of art, architecture and design. Bella’s shares with us that the past exhibitions she’s selected “pushed visitors to question their preconceived notions of architecture, the schindler house, the world around them and how they interact with/in those spaces.”
Inspired by the MAK Center for Art and Architecture’s Centennial Dinner and Benefit Event, our fourth rotation of the vitrine brings together images and objects from dinners and celebrations hosted at the Schindler House. From Thanksgiving and dance performances in the 1920s, to MAK Center for Art and Architecture events in the 2000s, Sylvia, our Graduate curatorial Intern, has showcased how the Schindler House has remained a site of exchange and celebration throughout its 100 year history.
