Heterotopias: Lessons from Los Angeles for Shanghai

  • Schindler House 835 North Kings Road West Hollywood, CA, 90069 (map)

UFI fellow Xiangning Li, an associate professor of architectural history, criticism and theory at the Tongji University College of Architecture and Urban Planning in Shanghai, gave a presentation analyzing the transplantation, application, adaptation and distortion of Western models in China. His talk focused on Shanghai’s “One City Nine Towns” development plan, in which nine suburbs have been designed as large-scale replicas of traditional European towns.

The MAK Urban Future Initiative (UFI) ran from 2008-10 at the Fitzpatrick-Leland House and was dedicated to creating meaningful cross-cultural exchange about the challenges confronting cities worldwide.
