A panel discussion with curator Jean-François Chevrier, urban theorist Mike Davis, artist Mike Kelley, Director of the MAK Vienna Peter Noever, and artist Jeff Wall.

The discussion focused on the theme of “the center” as a socio-cultural phenomenon, and on the centrifugal and centripetal powers that come together in urban centers like Los Angeles. This event, and a parallel discussion at the MAK Vienna in November 1996, were held on the occasion of documenta X, curated by Catherine David. Kunst im abseits? Art in the Center, a publication containing transcripts from the discussions in Los Angeles and Vienna, is available through the MAK Center bookstore.
